WorkshopsEach of the workshops below can be customized to fit your needs. Please ask if you are interested exposing your students to a skill you don't see listed!
Sound ExplorationTime: 30 – 50 min This is an entertaining and very accessible overview of how to create, and be creative with, body sounds. Rogers has taught this workshop to children from K-8 with great response, though it is equally as fun with a room full of people at any age who are willing to play. Though his simplified principles of sound, step-by-step demonstrations, fun activities, and rapid-fire humor, even those needing a high level of stimulus will remain engaged and challenged while the more methodical students get the structure they need to learn. By the end of the workshop, everyone will be making music with their bodies and (more importantly) hearing sound in a whole new way! Inside the Mind & Mouth of The One Mouth BandTime: 20 – 50 min Ever wanted to BE all of the music all by yourself? Curious about how to sound like more than just your own voice (or maybe drums)? In this workshop, The One Mouth Band will provide an overview of his thought process and outline techniques for creating a full band sound with nothing but your mouth! Bass For The Rest Of UsTime: 50 min No longer need you feel like a bass trapped in a tenor’s body! This is the place for intermediate/advanced vocalists to learn several methods of making low pitches even if they don't have bass voices. Topics include inhaling notes, buzzing pitches, split-voice singing, and signal processing (FX). Women are especially encouraged, curious basses also welcome. Becoming A Vocal Rhythm SectionTime: 50 min If you already have some vocal percussion chops and bass skills, why not put the two together and become a vocal rhythm section? It’s all the rage in modern a cappella (M-PACT, FOCS, HookSlide, etc.). Come learn a few basic musical/physiological concepts, how to buzz you lips like a bass, and then intelligently integrate vocal percussion for the seemingly impossible drum & bass routine! Venturing Into The Nether Regions Of VocalityTime: 50 min You only use a fraction of the sounds you are capable of when speaking or singing. This workshop enables students to use basic scientific concepts to achieve greater creativity, and find their own unique sounds. The One Mouth Band has many creative approaches to helping students discover parts of their voice they never knew they had, and safely bring these sounds back into a musical context. This inspiring workshop is open to singers of all levels. Rhythm Made RealTime: 50 min Even very talented vocalists are sometimes lacking in their rhythmic skills. This workshop is open to all levels of singers who are willing to recite the mantra “Rhythm above all.” But what is rhythm? And how does it work? What is the mystical “groove” musicians talk about? The One Mouth Band has distilled his study of rhythm (with teachers like Pete Magadini, Reinhard Flatishler, Keith Terry, Frank Martin, & Phil Mattson) down to a few key concepts which students can physically experience and internalize to enhance their musicianship and enjoyment. Scat Made SafeTime: 50 - 90 minutes Beginning and intermediate vocalists make great strides towards overcoming their fear of improvisation in this interactive workshop. Rogers emphasizes the power of the ear to overcome any music obstacle, connecting with students by relating his own personal experiences in musical development and creating a safe environment to share and learn from each other. The primary focus is to help students connect to their music in creative new ways, rather than the traditional, theoretical approach. One or more of this workshop’s targeted exercises will feed students just what they need to make their next musical step into vocal improvisation. Vocal PercussionTime: 30 minutes/each Level 1: Drums meet MouthWhere beginners can comfortably take their first journey into making drum noises with their mouths, while also learning about the role a drummer fills in common musical styles. By the end of this workshop, every participant will be able to imitate the three basic elements of a drum set: kick, high-hat, and snare. Level 2: Collect the whole set! After mastering the basic elements of a drum set, it’s time to learn about some of the more complex sounds many vocal percussionists employ. This workshop covers several alternate snare and kick drum sounds, as well as cymbals, tom-toms, brushes, and some electronic percussion sounds. Time will also be spent learning some basic rhythmic patterns common to jazz, rock, pop, and funk drumming. Level 3: Don’t just fall for the Traps!Enough with the drum (trap) set, there’s a world of PERCUSSION
out there! Intermediate and advanced vocal percussionists will enjoy finding
all sorts of new sounds from bongos to turntables to cuicas. Rogers will
also address how to integrate these sounds into your existing repertoire,
and leave plenty of time for the inevitable onslaught of student questions. |
